How to search old Chrome history
Chrome’s built-in history page works well when you remember an exact word from a page title or URL. It becomes much harder when the visit happened weeks or months ago and all you remember is something vague such as “that PDF tool,” “the research site I used last month,” or “a website with an article about this topic.”
Start with Chrome’s built-in history search
Open chrome://history/ and search for any word you remember from the page title or domain. If you know roughly when you visited the page, combine the search with your memory of the date and scan the surrounding entries.
This works best when you remember what the page was called.
Search by domain when you remember the website
Sometimes you remember the site but not the page. Searching for the domain can reduce hundreds of unrelated history entries to the pages you opened on that website.
The problem is that ordinary browser history is still a page-by-page list. A site you used heavily can produce dozens or hundreds of entries.
Search the way you actually remember
A different approach is to organize history by website first. BestHistory groups visits into websites and then keeps the individual pages underneath each site. You can search website names, domains, tags, notes and old page titles.
That is useful when your memory sounds like:
- “the website I used to convert a PDF”;
- “that AI tool I tried a few weeks ago”;
- “the shopping site where I checked a product”;
- “the article was somewhere on a site I visited a lot.”
Instead of searching one flat list of page visits, you first recover the website, then inspect or search the pages you visited there.
Add your own memory cues
Browser titles are written for websites, not for your future memory. Adding a short personal note such as “used this for invoice OCR” can be much more useful months later than the official page title.
BestHistory supports notes and tags for exactly this reason. They create extra search paths without changing the original browser history.
Keep history private when necessary
Browsing history is sensitive. BestHistory is local-first: the normal browsing-history dataset is processed on your device rather than uploaded to the BestHistory account server. Private Mode can also keep selected private records encrypted locally.
Try the website-first approach
If your main problem is not deleting history but finding old websites again, BestHistory v1.0.0 is now the official release and the Chrome Web Store listing is coming soon. Visit the official BestHistory website or see the installation guide.
